Gulnara

Gulnara

Teresa Hamlin

Gulnara lives in the regional city of Zaqatala. She had never knit socks before, but had made many other handmade products. We gave her a small bit of yarn to start with, unsure about her ability level. She watched the YouTube videos that we created, and taught herself how to make the socks. When we came back the next time, we were delighted by the quality of her products. She soon was knitting not only socks for us, but also fingerless gloves and Christmas Tree Skits (a new product that we are developing). She is truly a gifted knitter.

She says that she is grateful for this work because her firstborn daughter entered university this year, which has increased family expenses. Her two younger children still live at home. Her husband is a teacher at the local mosque. They moved to Zaqatala for her husband’s job, and since her kids are a bit older, she was a slightly bored in their apartment. This job allows her to grow and develop her skill, provide for her children and gives her something productive to do at home when she’s alone.
