Bahar lives in a quaint mountain village in the Qebele region of Azerbaijan. We met her and her sister on our “Epic Walk”, when we were looking for new places, knitters and designs for our slipper socks. Communication with Bahar and her sister is challenging because they are both hard-of-hearing and have speech impediments. Though both of them are in their fifties, they have never married, and live together with their aging mother. Life with disabilities is challenging in the village and there are limited opportunities for them. Therefore, they were ecstatic to have the opportunity to knit for Azerbaijani Socks. With the money she earned through knitting, Bahar bought herself a new phone. She is very proud of this- there is such joy in being able to meet her own needs/wants through her own work.
Many of Bahar’s designs include hearts, a little message of love knit into the socks.
