Sevinj is a member of a minority people group called the Rutul. In the traditions of her people, she moved into her in-law’s home at the time of her marriage. They live in the tiny, mountainous town of Shin, in the Sheki district of Azerbaijan. In the summer months, the garden brims with fruits and vegetables, and in the winter they are shrouded in snow. It is a beautiful place to raise her two young sons. Her firstborn, a robust three-year old, happily helps her in the garden pulling down apples, corn and beans. Her younger son, at ten months is loved and held by grandparents and cousins as Sevinj goes about her day. It is a pleasant and happy home.
Sevinj is a self-taught knitter. At the age of seventeen, her father bought her a pair of knitting needles and a skein of yarn. Through much trial and error, Sevinj worked hard at learning the art of knitting. She used the same yarn over and over again as she practiced. Now, at the age of twenty-five, she has become a member of the Azerbaijani Socks knitting team! She makes our adorable fingerless gloves.
